Clarinda, Iowa - Marvin Negley, President of the Glenn
Miller Birthplace Society, has announced that the Society will build a
Glenn Miller Museum. For years they have received donations of memorabilia,
from Tex Beneke, Moe Purtil, Jimmy Priddy, collector Alan Timpson, and
a number of other fans.
For quite awhile, they had needed a place to display all of these items
and collections, and the powers-that-be decided that the museum would
be a wonderful compliment to the Miller Birthplace Home, as the two attractions
would benefit from each other.
They plan to build a one-story building on the property west of the Birthplace
Home. This will give additional room for expansion and protect the surroundings
of the Home. The Society is receiving wonderful support from the mayor,
the city of Clarinda, the County government, interested citizens, and
the Iowa Tourism Office. The project will be financed with money from
a $250,000 fund drive and matching grants. The plan is to have the fund
drive completed by September, 2008, so they can apply for matching funds
from the Iowa Community Attraction and Tourism Grant Program.
